Definitive Netflix Ranking

Those who know me know I love television, specifically Netflix, and I enjoy a good binge watching of what I deem a great show. I can spend countless hours procrastinating my time away by watching my favorite seasons of F.R.I.E.N.D.S. (which are seasons four, five, and six, in case you are curious). Since this is one of my favorite pass times, I have come across a lot of great shows, and I thought that I would introduce you to my top ten Netflix shows. So here are my recommendations!

  1. Supernatural

This is a show for those of you who love horror/suspense movies. The plot line follows two brothers, Dean and Sam Winchester, who are on a mission to save the world by hunting various creatures including werewolves, vampires, demons, banshees, tricksters, reapers, wendigos, the list goes on and on. This show has many twists and turns with these two lovable characters, weaving their stories into many side characters that just stir the pot of drama.

  1. New Girl

Jessica Day is a newly dumped elementary school teacher who is down on her luck. She moves out of her ex’s house, and into an apartment with three guys that she has never met, this is where the fun begins. Zooey Deschanel encompasses this character and is a comedic genius within the show. The plot develops as these four new roommates become the closest of friends and have some crazy adventures together. If you are looking for a short comedy to get into, this is the show for you!

  1. Psych

Shawn Spencer and Burton Guster are two wannabe detectives who constantly get in the way of the Santa Barbra Police Department, but the twist is that Shawn is “psychic”. The funny relationship between Shawn and Gus will make you have new goals for your friendships. The adventures and crimes that they solve in this comedic cop show will have you falling off your seat laughing.

  1. Grace and Frankie

This show is quite different from the last few described because it is about two recently divorced women in their sixties, but the twist is that their husbands divorced them so that they could be together. In one episode Grace and Frankie can have you laughing, and then crying, and then crying because you are laughing. The plot builds around Grace and Frankie who are going through very similar situations, but handle them in completely different ways. The show encapsulates divorce, gay marriage, and beautiful friendships that can come from trials.

  1. Heroes

Now I must admit that I have not completed this show, but it is too good to not add to the list! Heroes follows many people who develop special abilities including flying, mind reading, shape shifting, healing, many more and a “sponge” who can absorb these powers. This show weaves together a group of people who try and save the world while learning about their own powers. The show was canceled awhile back, but is being revamped RIGHT NOW! Heroes Reborn, a miniseries premiering on September 24th, will be a continuation of Heroes, and executive producer, Tim Kring, will be returning.

  1. How I Met Your Mother

The title is pretty self-explanatory; the show follows five friends living in New York City. Ted, the hopeless romantic who is telling the main story of how he meets his wife, goes through many ups and downs but is always surrounded by his close knit group of friends. The show is a powerhouse of celebs, including Neil Patrick Harris, Jason Segel and Alyson Hannigan. How I Met Your Mother is becoming a cult show and I think will go down as a classic of this generation.

  1. The Office (The American Version)

Steve Carrel plays Michael Scott who is a regional manager at a paper company in Scranton, Pennsylvania. The show takes place in an Office, duh, but is no ordinary place of work. Pranks, diversity seminars, holiday parties, and fundraisers are just a few of the hilarious settings in which these colleagues interact. Some key characters that everyone loves are Jim Halpert, Pam Beesly, and Dwight Schrute. The story line is about the characters working in the office and how they begin to weave together throughout the ups and downs of Dunder Mifflin, the paper company in which they work for. FACT: You will love this show if you give it a chance.

  1. Gilmore Girls

Now this is one of those shows I have watched over and over again, and could continue to watch for the rest of my life. Lorelei and Rory Gilmore are two brilliant and witty female characters that find and lose love throughout the seven seasons. They have an interesting mother-daughter dynamic that creates the strong bond you love throughout the show. They live in Stars Hollow, which is a quirky small town in Connecticut. This setting provides many hilarious secondary characters including Kirk, Babette and Miss Patty. As you watch Rory grow up through high school and move on to college, you learn two perspectives of love and learning, intertwined with witty pop culture references and hilarious story lines.

  1. F.R.I.E.N.D.S.

This show is a classic comedy that takes place in the late nineties and early two thousands following a group of six friends, har har, in their late twenties living in New York City. Each friend is very unique and brings funny traits to influence the group; Joey, the lovable and goofy Italian actor, Chandler, the witty and sarcastic friend, Ross, the intelligent paleontologist who is obsessed with weddings, Rachel, the newcomer to the real world who loves fashion, Phoebe, the hippy yet tough friend who grew up on the streets of NYC, and Monica, the formally fat driven chef who is VERY organized. These characters go through life with each other while taking the time to stop and have coffee at Central Perk everyday.

  1. Parks and Recreation

Amy Poehler works as Leslie Knope, a driven and passionate deputy in Pawnee Indiana’s Parks and Recreation department. The department is filled with crazy hilarious characters played by a star-studded cast including Chris Pratt, Nick Offerman, Aziz Anzari, Aubrey Plaza, Adam Scott, and Rashida Jones. Parks and Recreation encompasses government life in a small town, and makes you fall in love with Amy Poehler, if you haven’t already. Leslie Knope is a strong female character who dominates her department and improves her city one project at a time. She works with some interesting characters that you grow to love and can relate to in such strange ways. Ron Swanson is the epitome of a “man’s man” and is a liberalist who is not afraid to share his opinion, Tom Haverford is a money driven entrepreneur who values pop culture and fine clothing, April Ludgate is a college intern who doesn’t care about much and likes to add strange perspectives to everything, Andy Dwyer, who is a lovable guy who strangely fits into the office. If you have not watched this show, you are missing out on a vital life experience.
